New series titled Artist and Architecture starts June 4th

Image
As part of its ongoing efforts to raise the awareness of historic preservation on Staten Island, the Preservation League of Staten Island (PLSI) is launching a new series titled “Artist and Architecture.” The series kicks off June 4 with a presentation in the Stapleton Heights home of Halina and James McCormack, a renowned art restorer and award-winning architect, respectively. As both part of the PLSI’s mission of education and a means for fundraising, Artist and Architecture will feature informal talks by local award-winning artists, designers and architects who exercise their talents in some of the Island’s historic and architecturally unique homes. These vintage buildings provide inspiration and ideas for their talented owners, who, in the course of the series, will speak on the joys and challenges of their respective trades. Three events are planned for this year: the spring program in the McCormacks’ 1870 mansion; a late summer/early fall visit to the West Brighton home of...

New Book on West Brighton

Image
From Arcadia Publishing : Book Description: In the late 19th century, West Brighton became known as "Factoryville" after several industries set up shop in the vicinity. One of the largest, Barrett, Nephews, and Company, a dyeing and cleaning establishment, employed hundreds of Staten Islanders. Several prominent historical figures have resided in the region as well, including former first lady Julia Gardiner Tyler, who, in 1862, left the Confederacy (but not her Southern sympathies) to rejoin her family in West Brighton upon the death of former U.S. president John Tyler. The neighborhood is also the home of the famed Staten Island Zoo; the idyllic beauty of Silver Lake, Clove Lakes, and Walker Park lie within walking distance. But the most enduring trait of West Brighton is its people--the generations of families that have put down roots in one of the most scenic communities on Staten Island. Author Bio: Authors Jim Harkins and Cecelia N. Brunner are lifelong Staten Is...

The Iconography of Staten Island

Image
Historic Marker In an ongoing series of Essays, I will focus on the iconography of Staten Island from different periods of its history, primarily highlighting the built environment, the planning of the streetscapes, the planning of its parks, its open spaces, woods, village centers and the impact of overdevelopment and the unispired city planning, exploitation of the natural areas and the "landscape pollution" that have had a deleterious effect on the once picturesque landscape of Richmond County. I will try to offer inspirational solutions to the overdevelopment that is plagueing Staten Island. Illustrations will demonstate existing neighborhoods with 'minimal' planning to areas and architecture that have utilized some of the historic hints that are still available on Staten Island. In many instances, it will be evident that some areas would be considered suburban strip-malls, and other areas as aesthetically beautiful structures and well-planned green spaces. ...
