THE 2011 AWARDS FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION The Preservation League of Staten Island is holding its annual PRESERVATION AWARDS ceremony on Saturday, April 16th starting at 1:00 PM at New Dorp Moravian Church, 2205 Richmond Road.  This program is a showcase for the love and vitality that Staten Island homeowners have for Staten Island.   Past awardees include Tottenville Historical Society, Westerleigh Civic Association, St. George Theatre, Sandy Ground Historical Society and the many homeowners and property owners who have restored their properties and saved a piece of Staten Island History for generations to come. The awards program will consist of a slide presentation of the winning houses and buildings, presentation of the bronze plaques and certificates, typically followed by comments from the winning owners and designers. Historic Marker In an ongoing series of Essays, I will focus on the iconography of Staten Island from different periods of its history, primarily highlighting the built environment, the planning of the streetscapes, the planning of its parks, its open spaces, woods, village centers and the impact of overdevelopment and the unispired city planning, exploitation of the natural areas and the "landscape pollution" that have had a deleterious effect on the once picturesque landscape of Richmond County. I will try to offer inspirational solutions to the overdevelopment that is plagueing Staten Island. Illustrations will demonstate existing neighborhoods with 'minimal' planning to areas and architecture that have utilized some of the historic hints that are still available on Staten Island. In many instances, it will be evident that some areas would be considered suburban strip-malls, and other areas as aesthetically beautiful structures and well-planned green spaces. ...

Open to the public the series will be both fun and informative. Business and industry, transportation, ethnic groups, Native Americans, religious institutions, Slavery on Staten Island, the Revolutionary War and Colonial Period, natural history, old movie theaters, education, healthcare institutions, and much more will be featured from an historical perspective.
